We have an incredibly exciting new partnership with Bert and Pennie How from Peel Forest Lodge. For the 2008 hunting season we have put together an unheard of package with this incredible location at 4-½ star luxury lodge with one of the best guides in New Zealand . Bert How has been commercially guiding for over 25 years and has guided hunters to the current #1, #2 and #4 Largest SCI bull Tahr in the world.

If that in itself is not an incredible resume put together with his wife who is an incredible host and cook, a locale that is second to none you have the makings for an incredible experience that will bring a smile to your face for years to come!

Peel Forest Lodge is one of the South Island's best-kept secrets, nestled amongst native bush on the edge of the Southern Alps . Enjoy the warmth of this fully equipped, modern log home.
Only 1.5 hours drive from Christchurch , this self-contained lodge comfortably sleeps 9 and is equipped with a spacious kitchen ideal for hosting large groups or just a pair of hunters.

Located at the base of the Southern Alps it makes for easy access to the many private concessions that Bert guides hunters on.

The Tahr package that we have put together is one that is a bit different by New Zealand standards, as we do not employ the use of a helicopter. This is a completely fair chase hunt utilizing private land and great four-wheel drive access to achieve the elevation need to get to the prime Tahr habitat

This Hunt package is also designed to be extremely flexible. The 3999.00 2X1 package price is the same if you would like to hunt Red Deer , Chamois or Fallow Deer instead of a Himalayan Tahr.

The hunting on the South Island is very good and the opportunity to harvest

additional animals is available on a trophy fee basis. If you are successful in harvesting a Tahr and would like to add an additional game animal such as Fallow Deer, Chamois or a Red Stag for just 2,250.00

Call Rodney Smith today for more information on this incredible deal!!

Call us for your free DVD on Chris Jolly's Wairarapa Hunt

Chris Jolly's private and exclusive property ranges over 20,000 acres of Southern Wairarapa coastal hill country, which is located on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand.  You will fly into Wellington New Zealand and will be met by Chris or Simone and transferred to the station.  Here we encounter a wide variety of terrain and hunting conditions, large native Podocarp forest, scublands (reverted pasture) and open grass pastures make for a perfect environment for both the deer and the hunter.

After the Roar the stags tend to drift out of the forest and feed on the adjacent grasses, recouping after the rigors of the mating season.  This type of hunting is more about the use of binoculars and long range shooting and often produces the biggest stags.  We are targeting 10-14  point animals that may be up to 40 inches.  We do NOT charge trophy fees for each animal shot so there is always a chance to take a second bigger stag during your stay.  Currently the only trophy fees are for Fallow Deer stags at $1,000.

Accommodation is in a comfortable, purpose built lodge/camp.  On most occasions you will have the camp to yourselves as they only take a maximum of 4 hunters.  Fully carpeted floors, comfortable beds, warm fires and great cooking make for a welcome retreat from the vigor's of a day of hunting.  With seven miles of private coastline, caryfish and abalone (paua) often supplement venison, wild pork and wild mutton on the menu.

The Red Deer Stags, of ten to fourteen points are our main quarry but you can discuss with Chris your particular hopes/aspirations.  Often we need to cull inferior stags and excess hinds are we are happy to arrange non-trophy type meat hunts.  We also encounter wild pigs and fallow deer, although the fallow herd is in its infancy.

The hunting season, starts in mid to late March.  The roar takes place approximately from late March until late April.  We continue to trophy hunt until August at which point the large stags are near to casting their antlers.  Non-trophy hunts can be done (by arrangement) year round.  This is one of the most popular camps for 2007 and will sell out again for 2008.  A $200 per person non refundable deposit will secure your hunt dates for 2008.

2008 SHEARWATER LODGE PHOTO'S

Shearwater Lodge has been our best selling lodge for the last 3 years running and can only be described as 'hard to believe.'  The value for money that this package offers is second to none.  The hunt package at Shearwater Lodge is 7 nights/8 days featuring an arrival day, a departure day and 6 full days in the field hunting, this package is a day longer then most of our other properties.

With the highest elevation privately owned property in New Zealand, this lodge is located in a truly special place.  With access to the lodge via 4 wheel drive or Snow Cat it is in the heart of the prime South Island hunting area outside of Kaikoura.

The purpose built lodge has 6 bedrooms all with their own bathroom with shower and toilet .  Hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings, leather couches and a large stone fireplace make this a fabulous place to enjoy a week of New Zealand hospitality.  With two chefs on staff your meals are excellent.  Every morning from the deck of the lodge you will glass 6 to 15 branch antlered Red Stags before you ever head out for a day in the field.  The animal numbers have been growing every year and the hunting will only get better.

Don Cameron and his son Daniel will be your guides on the property they have had in the family for over 25 years.

The opportunities for some tremendous free ranging Arapawa Rams, as well as 9 to 11 inch buck chamois make this a fun place to spend a week with your hunting partners and your family.

“Puhi Peaks” is a magnificent and unique property on the North Eastern coast of NZ's South Island, just 30km from the small farming and fishing town of Kaikoura.  The area takes in a portion of South Island Mountains, which, at 1500ft higher than Queenstown's Remarkables Mountain Range, is the highest privately owned property in New Zealand.

In its upper reaches, “Puhi Peaks” is a pristine alpine wonderland, and in 2004 the area became the location of Shearwater Lodge when Alpine Discovery Ltd and Kaikoura Wilderness Walks was established.

In 2005 the Board of Alpine Discovery Ltd endorsed the setting up of a charitable trust for the protection of the endangered seabird, the Huttons Shearwater, and also set in motion the process to have the entire upper part of the area protected in perpetuity under a QE11 National Trust Protection Covenant.   This area is now known as the Puhi Peaks Nature Reserve.

  Frequently asked Questions

How do you hunt these things?

All our hunts are spot and stalk free range hunts so good optics are a must.   Once a potential trophy is identified we may spend the rest of the day stalking it.   Most animals are shot at a range from between 100 to 400 yards

What will the weather be like?

March April May autumn/fall expect cold nights and changeable weather with some rain. Warm clothing essential but be prepared for some hot days.   June July August expect winter conditions with possibly some very light snow - warm clothing essential

What will the terrain be like?

For Red Stag, chamois, goat, ram, and boar, you will be hunting in coastal alpine areas which have good access and have a network of walking trails, but expect to deviate across hillsides and creek beds etc

All Tahr Hunting is in inland mountain country with some vehicle access. Expect most hunting to be away from formed trails

How fit do I need to be?

A moderate level of fitness and good mobility is desirable

When is the best time to come?

For red stag the rut/roar mating period lasts from April through to May when the stags are out with the hinds, but they can be hunted through to September, after that they shed their antlers

Chamois May is mating time late April through to June is is the optimum time

Tahr late May-June is mating time these can be hunted through to October when good bachelor mobs of bulls can be encountered in lower terrain

Other species can be hunted April to October

Can I bring my own Rifle?

Yes, there is no difficulty in bringing conventional hunting rifles into NZ

Please advise us at least 1 month before arrival and we will assist you in obtaining your visitor firearms license

We can also supply rifles if required

What Caliber is required?

•  7mm mag or similar will be sufficient

What type of accommodation can I expect?

Tahr hunting will be from a rustic mountain cabin (own sleeping bag required) in the hunting area or from a farmstay accommodation.

Other species are hunted from an upmarket lodge situated in the hunting area.   Accommodation here is in private guest-rooms with super king beds, central heating, attached ensuite bathroom.   For more information regarding the accommodation, see http://www.kaikourawilderness.co.nz/Track/Accomodation.aspx

Can my wife or non hunting partner accompany me?

Yes, we can organize other activities for non-hunters if necessary

What about Taxidermy and how long does it take for my trophy to reach home?

Your guide will field dress your trophy and ensure that it is properly cared for, we will then organize a qualified taxidermist to complete the head skinning process and expedite your trophy and ship it off to your taxidermist which normally takes 3 to 6 weeks.

We can also arrange for your trophy to be mounted here in NZ where mounting costs are considerably less - Please note all Taxidermy costs are additional.
