Day 1 - AUCKLAND / WAITOMO/ROTORUA
Travel south over the Bombay Hills, following the Waikato River to
Hamilton, then on via Te Awamutu to Waitomo. Enjoy a buffet lunch before
visiting the Waitomo Caves. Tours to the caves include the magical
boat-ride through the Glow- worm Grotto. Continue on via Lake Karapiro
to arrive in Rotorua. This evening enjoy a Maori Hangi (feast) and
concert.
Day 2 - ROTORUA SIGHTSEEING
Rotorua is the centre of
the geothermal region of New Zealand and is also the main centre for
Maori culture. Boiling mud, geysers and silica deposits surrounding the
lake attract visitors from all over the world. Enjoy a half day thermal
tour – visit Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve, Rainbow Springs and Farm Show
and Lake Rotorua. This afternoon is at leisure. Perhaps take a tour to
Mt Tarawera or the Buried Village or enjoy a swim at the Polynesian Spa
(own expense).
Day 3 - ROTORUA / WELLINGTON
This morning travel by
coach to Otorohanga where you will join the Overlander train to the
capital city of Wellington.
Day 4 - WELLINGTON
Today is at leisure. Make
time to visit "Te Papa" the museum of New Zealand, which uses the most
advanced technology to combine the features of museums and entertainment
centres. Admission free. Nominal fees for rides.
Day 5 -
WELLINGTON / PICTON / CHRISTCHURCH
Depart Wellington
for Picton on the inter-island ferry. Upon arrival in Picton board the
Coastal Pacific Train which wends its way along the East Coast, to
Christchurch. On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel.
Day 6 -
CHRISTCHURCH
Today is at
leisure, to enjoy the " Garden City".
Day 7 -
CHRISTCHURCH / MT COOK / QUEENSTOWN
From Christchurch travel South across the Canterbury Plains, through
farming communities before climbing up to high plains of the McKenzie
Country, pausing at the Church of the Good Shepherd to view Lake Tekapo.
Continue to Mount Cook village nestled under New Zealand's highest
mountain, Mt Cook. The mountain overlooks a network of glaciers that
feed Lakes Tekapo and Pukaki. There are a number of activities including
walks, tramps and scenic flights that will enable views of Mt Cook and
the glaciers (own expense). From Mount Cook return along the length of
Lake Pukaki then head South through Twizel and Omarama to the scenic
Lindis Pass. Once over the pass follow the Clutha Valley to its junction
with the Kawarau Gorge at Cromwell. Queenstown is reached by following
the "gold trail" alongside the winding Kawarau River. Queenstown nestles
up to the northern shore of Lake Wakatipu from where it commands an
expansive view of the peaks which surround the lake.
Day 8 -
MILFORD SOUND DAY EXCURSION
Drive through the magnificent beech forests of the Eglington and
Hollyford Valleys, through the Homer Tunnel to Milford Sound for a
launch excursion on the fiord. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery including
the awe-inspiring Mitre Peak with a full commentary on the natural
history of the fiord. Lunch is included. Upon conclusion return to
Queenstown.
Day 9 - QUEENSTOWN
Today is free to enjoy the many leisure pursuits. The local staff at
"The Station" can assist with information and reservations for the huge
selection of things to see and do.
Day 10 - QUEENSTOWN

FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER
This morning depart the hotel for a full day journey from Queenstown to
Franz Josef, During the trip, you will traverse Kawarau Gorge, Hawera
River and Lake Wanaka. Travel through Haast and continue on to Franz
Josef (lunch own expense).
Day 11 - FRANZ JOSEF

GREYMOUTH / CHRISTCHURCH
Today travel to Greymouth and board the scenic Tranz Alpine for a rail
journey famous for its spectacular mountain scenery as it traverses the
Southern Alps which divide the East and West coasts of the South Island.
Travel across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch arriving at
approximately 6:35pm.
