FIORDLAND - Southern
Hideaway
5 Days / 4 Nights
Fiordland
offers numerous natural attractions, including the famous Milford Sound.
Gateway to the Fiordland National Park, Te Anau - a small settlement on the
shortest of the largest of the Southern Lakes - is the main staging post for
excursions to Milford, Dusky and Doubtful Sounds. known as the "Walking
Capital of the World" with over 500 kilometres of walks. Lakes and rivers
offer excellent fishing for brown and rainbow trout.
Day 1-
CHRISTCHURCH / MT COOK / QUEENSTOWN
From Christchurch, travel South across the Canterbury Plains, through
farming communities before climbing up to high plains of the McKenzie
Country, pausing at the Church of the Good Shepherd to view Lake Tekapo.
Continue to Mount Cook village nestled under New Zealand's highest mountain,
Mt Cook. The mountain overlooks a network of glaciers that feed Lakes Tekapo
and Pukaki. There are a number of activities including walks, tramps and
scenic flights that will enable views of Mt Cook and the glaciers (own
expense). From Mount Cook return along the length of Lake Pukaki then head
South through Twizel and Omarama to the scenic Lindis Pass. Once over the
pass follow the Clutha Valley to its junction with the Kawarau Gorge at
Cromwell. Queenstown is reached by following the "gold trail" alongside the
winding Kawarau River. Queenstown nestles up to the northern shore of
Lake Wakatipu
from where it commands an expansive view of the peaks that surround the
lake.
Day 2 - DOUBTFUL SOUND EXPERIENCE / TE ANAU
Enjoy a relaxing coach trip along the shore of Lake Wakatipu to Pearl
Harbour, Manapouri, where you will board a launch and cruise across
picturesque Lake Manapouri before arriving at West Arm. You will then be
transported by coach to the underground Power Station where you can view the
tunnel, rock formations and the machine hall. Then travel by coach to
Doubtful Sound where you will board a catamaran and enjoy a full length
cruise of Doubtful Sound. View waterfalls, rainforests, historic sites,
mountains and wildlife. Look out for a resident pod of Bottle-nosed dolphins
and a colony of fur seals at the mouth of the fiord. On the return, call
into Hall Arm, a spectacular example of the region’s geomorphology.
Here the engines are
turned off and you are treated to the "sounds of silence" before returning
to Te Anau: Lunch today is included.
Day 3 - TE ANAU / MILFORD SOUND /
QUEENSTOWN
Drive through the
magnificent beech forests of the Eglington and Hollyford Valleys, through
the Homer Tunnel to Milford Sound for a launch excursion on the fiord. Enjoy
the breathtaking scenery including the awe- inspiring Mitre Peak with a full
commentary on the natural history of the fiord. Lunch included. Upon
