CAR AND ACCOMMODATION PASSES

New Zealand is an ideal touring destination for those who want the freedom and flexibility to drive themselves. Scenery can change dramatically within quite short distances. By international standards, traffic is relatively light on main roads outside the major cities.
State Highways are generally one lane in each direction, sealed, well sign posted, with wide shoulders and regular passing bays. Multilane motorways or freeways are only found on approaches and through major cities. Distances (and speed limits) are shown in kilometers per hour.
Whilst the open road speed limit is 100 kilometers per hour (about 60 mph), we recommend that you allow an average of 80 kph when planning your trip to allow for traffic delays, rest and photo stops.
Motor fuel is dispensed by the litre. (An Imperial Gallon equals about 4.5 litres while a US Gallon equates to about 3.8 litres). Currently petrol costs about US$1.00 per litre, while diesel sells for around $0.65 per litre. Prices do fluctuate so these prices may change at any time.

The suggested self-drive itineraries we have prepared for your guidance are just that - suggested. The packages are simply examples of what can be done in 10, or 14 days using car and accommodation passes on a freewheel basis.

RATES INCLUDE:

IMPORTANT NOTES:
Accident Damage Excess & Bond:
US$2812.50 Accident Damage Excess (ADE) applies. The bond of US$2812.50 which is the excess is payable at commencement of hire and is refunded in full upon return of vehicle in clean condition with no damage to vehicle or third party property.

Accident Excess Reduction:
There are 2 options in reducing accident damage excess as listed below:

Groups ECMR – FWAR to reduce excess to US$225.00
$16.88 per day

$337.50 per month (28-30 days)
Groups IFAR, LVAR & XVAR to reduce excess to US$281.25

Rates:
Rates are based on a 24 hour basis. When returning the vehicle Thrifty allows a grace period of 59 minutes after which an extra full day will be charged.

Rental Minimum:
Each rental must be for a minimum of three or more consecutive days.

Inter-Island Rentals:
On inter-city (one way) rentals involving both North & South Islands, vehicles cannot be taken on the inter-island ferry. Renters must leave their vehicle on one island and collect another rental vehicle on the next island. Each rental must be for a minimum of three days and the second or subsequent rentals must be picked up within 24 hours of returning the previous rental.

Inter-City (one way) Rentals:
A one way rental fee does not apply provided the rental extends for a minimum of 3 consecutive days on any given island.
